Enagás and its partners drive the future of solid-state batteries with Basquevolt

Enagás Emprende strengthens its commitment to energy innovation by investing in Basquevolt to accelerate the development of solid-state batteries and advance towards a more sustainable energy transition.

Enagás, through its Enagás Emprende initiative, is proud to announce its participation in a new round of funding for Basquevolt, a company dedicated to the development of solid-state batteries. This strategic collaboration, carried out jointly with the Center for Industrial Technological Development (CDTI) and EIT InnoEnergy, represents a crucial step towards more efficient and sustainable energy solutions.

Basquevolt, founded in June 2022, is a joint effort that includes prominent shareholders such as the Basque Government, Iberdrola, CIE Automotive, EIT InnoEnergy, CIC energiGUNE, and Enagás. The company has distinguished itself for its commitment to innovation in energy storage, specifically through solid-state batteries, which promise to overcome the current limitations of lithium batteries with liquid electrolyte.

The recent investment from the CDTI, amounting to 2,025,000 euros, falls within its Innvierte program and strengthens Basquevolt’s capacity to achieve its goal of mass production within five years. This ambitious project, supported by a total investment of over 700 million euros, will not only boost the production of advanced batteries but also create more than 800 direct jobs in the process.

Basquevolt’s first phase will be headquartered in the Álava Technology Park, benefiting from the proximity and technological support of CIC energiGUNE. This center, recognized for its cutting-edge research in solid-state batteries, has a team of experts led by Michel Armand, a pioneer in the field of polymeric solid electrolyte. Basquevolt’s technology is based on a composite electrolyte patented by CIC energiGUNE, ensuring a solid foundation for its future development.

Basquevolt’s initial goal is to develop prototype cells and establish a pilot production line by 2027, with the ambition to begin commercial production in 2029. This technology will enable significantly higher energy density than current solutions, positioning Basquevolt as a European leader in the solid-state battery sector.

Enagás Emprende reaffirms its commitment to energy transition and technological innovation through its participation in Basquevolt. Since its creation in 2015, Enagás Emprende has invested in 13 innovative companies in areas such as renewable gases, decarbonization, sustainable mobility, energy efficiency, and clean technologies. Among these companies are H2Greem, E4Efficiency, Scale Gas, Trovant, and Satlantis.

In addition to its direct investments, Enagás Emprende has launched the Klima Energy Transition Fund, a venture capital fund focused on mature energy transition companies, and participates in the Hy24 hydrogen infrastructure fund.

With this new investment in Basquevolt, Enagás Emprende continues to consolidate its position as a key player in promoting disruptive technologies that facilitate a more sustainable and efficient energy transition.
