Enagás drives the connection between science and industry at Science 4 Industry 2026

Enagás Emprende took part, together with colleagues from Innovation and Technological Development, in Science 4 Industry, the leading European forum on technology transfer and deep science, held at La Nave (Madrid), where Enagás presented several of its industrial challenges and its open innovation approach, reinforcing its commitment to collaboration with startups and scientific projects that drive the energy transition.

Enagás Emprende participated in a new edition of Science 4 Industry, one of Europe’s leading events in technology transfer and deep science, organised by the Autonomous University of Madrid and BeAble Capital. The event brought together startups, research centres, corporations and investors with the aim of accelerating the market deployment of scientific solutions and fostering collaboration between science and industry.

During the event, Emilio Martínez Gavira, Head of Entrepreneurship and Open Innovation at Enagás, and José Alfredo Lana Calvo, Innovation and Technological Development Coordinator, took part in the Industry Corner with the presentation “Technological Challenges of Enagás and Approach to Open Innovation with Enagás Emprende,” where they shared Enagás’ corporate innovation model, the Enagás Emprende strategy, and the role of the Hydrogen Technology Observatory as a key tool for identifying disruptive opportunities within the energy ecosystem.

In this context, four of the company’s technological challenges were presented, aimed at improving operational efficiency, strengthening industrial safety, and advancing the company’s sustainability and digitalisation objectives, offering entrepreneurs and innovators real needs for which we are seeking solutions. Below is a brief summary of each:

Automation of non-destructive testing through artificial intelligence

This challenge seeks to digitalise and automate the capture, analysis and traceability of non-destructive testing used in the construction of energy infrastructures. Through computer vision and artificial intelligence-based solutions, the goal is to enhance quality control, reduce inspection times, and integrate data directly into BIM and asset management systems.

Operational safety detection through digital elements

The objective is to develop intelligent systems capable of analysing images and sensor data to identify unsafe behaviours in real time —such as the absence of personal protective equipment or the use of unauthorised devices in ATEX areas— thereby strengthening risk prevention and safety culture in industrial environments.

Carbon footprint calculation in maintenance activities of critical assets

We are looking for digital tools that enable the measurement, analysis and reporting of the carbon footprint associated with the maintenance of large industrial equipment, such as compressors or turbines. These solutions will facilitate the identification of emission reduction opportunities, process optimisation, and compliance with the company’s ESG commitments.

ATEX casings for commercial mobile devices

The fourth challenge focuses on designing ATEX-certified casings that allow conventional phones and tablets to be used in industrial environments with potentially explosive atmospheres, while maintaining functionality, connectivity and ergonomics, and supporting the safe digitalisation of field operations.

These challenges are still open and can be accessed through the challenges section of the Science 4 Industry website.

Throughout the event, the Enagás Emprende team held meetings with startups, spin-offs and technology projects interested in these challenges and in our priority verticals in general, exploring potential collaboration pathways through our open innovation model, corporate venture development and technology entrepreneurship programmes.

With its participation in Science 4 Industry, Enagás Emprende reinforces its commitment to knowledge transfer, collaboration with the deep tech ecosystem, and the promotion of innovative solutions that contribute to a more efficient, safe and sustainable energy transition.
