Enagás promotes the Hydrogen Technology Observatory to accelerate the development of this energy vector.
In April 2024, Enagás took a decisive step towards the energy future with the launch of the Hydrogen Technology Observatory. This organization aims to be a driver for the exchange of technical knowledge within the hydrogen value chain, promoting technological development that will accelerate its large-scale deployment.
The Hydrogen Technology Observatory is established as a forum for discussion, bringing together organizations from the private, public, and academic sectors. One of its main missions is the promotion and dissemination of technological advancements in renewable hydrogen, facilitating informed decision-making for key sector players regarding the next steps and future needs. Through constant monitoring of technological developments, the Observatory seeks to identify trends and anticipate the evolution of the sector, while sharing best practices that foster innovation and its implementation.
This collaborative space is open to the inclusion of companies, institutions, and research centers, both national and European, that wish to join this effort. Moreover, it aims to establish public and private partnerships that share the same goal of promoting hydrogen as a fundamental pillar of the energy transition.
Scope and activities of the Observatory
The Observatory plays an active role in several key areas. On the one hand, it focuses on positioning R&D&I projects related to hydrogen, giving visibility to the advancements of European working groups in this field. It also promotes the dissemination of reports and prominent articles on the most relevant technological developments, as well as the conclusions and presentations generated at its events.
Through the organization of technical events, both in-person and virtual, the Observatory aims to delve into the challenges and opportunities presented by hydrogen development. These events, along with its communication strategy, ensure that the most notable actions of the Observatory reach a wider audience.
Publications and technical knowledge
The Observatory also focuses on sharing relevant technical knowledge. Among the recent publications it has highlighted is the Marcogaz report on the odorization of natural gas and hydrogen mixtures, which analyzes alternatives for the odorization of this mixed gas and its impact on infrastructure. Another important report is the joint work between Enagás and the Structural Materials Research Center (CIME), which evaluates circumferential welds in existing pipelines, a key step for converting the current network to hydrogen transport.
With the Hydrogen Technology Observatory, Enagás strengthens its commitment to technological innovation in the energy sector, making a decisive contribution to the transition towards a more sustainable future.
At Enagás Emprende, we promote the energy transition through technologies and new business models using entrepreneurship and open innovation tools. Therefore, an initiative like the Observatory will be excellent in helping us fulfill our mission, especially in the field of hydrogen.
